In 1950 Penfold's Chief Winemaker, Max Schubert, was sent to Europe for 3 months to study port and sherry making.
While he was away his wife, Thelma, managed to secure and move into this property after they both fell in love with it prior to Max's departure. It provided the space, beautiful surroundings and tranquility they wanted to bring up their family, in the haven of the prettily landscaped gardens.

Max was blown away by some of France's table wines, their quality, balance and longevity. He reckoned he could make a truly Australian wine to rival the best France had to offer- and the blueprint for Penfold's Grange was designed in his head on the long return journey.

After implementing many new techniques, the first experimental Grange was created in 1951 with Max's vision of it reaching its peak in 10-20 years. Unfortunately, most people who tried the first vintages disliked it intensely and couldn't see Max's vision of how it would mature over time. Penfold's Head Office ordered him to stop making it, following the 1956 vintage.
In 1960 Penfold's Board tasted the now 5-10 year old Granges and immediately put the 1955 into the Sydney Show where it won a gold medal. After enduring 10 years of harsh criticism Max's vision was finally recognised. In 2021 a bottle of 1951 Grange was sold at auction for $142,131.
Max continued experimenting and producing wonderful wines for Penfolds and Grange was recognised in Australia and on the World Stage. The electorate of Schubert was named in Max's honour, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia and he was named South Australian of the Year in 1990.

Max and Thelma raised their family in this property and lived here happily for the rest of their lives.
