Conceived in the late 19th. Century but born in the early 20th. Consuelo celebrated her one hundredth birthday in 2012. Attending her birth was an involved mid-wife, Bundaberg’s master carpenter,
Our builder, who built the dwelling with hand tools, skill, quality materials and more than a smidgen of love. Originally located on a two-acre block, the property still occupies a prime half acre corner allotment in Bundaberg West, close to primary and high schools, three local hospitals and Bundaberg's CBD. Consuelo was built for Robert and Elsie Kirkwood who lived in their charming and now historic Queenslander for 60 years. Considered by locals as one of the few remaining Grand Dames of Bundaberg, Consuelo has only been sold twice in her long and interesting lifetime.
Queenslanders are epitomized by verandahs and Consuelo has two outstanding examples, both shaded by quality canvas awnings. From the long verandah (18m long x 3m wide) observers have sweeping views of the saltwater pool and pool gardens. After taking in the views of their property the new owners could retire to their squatter’s chairs and share an afternoon drink whilst recounting the day’s events with partners and/or children. This area is always a cool oasis with wafting breezes flowing along its length even on the hottest of afternoons. The second verandah is a mecca for catching the trilling and warbling as the extensive tropical plantings and mature trees attract numerous species of birdlife. Whilst listening to the butcher birds and parrots, if observant, one will notice in the corner of the block one of the grandest bottle trees in Queensland. Upstairs, Consuelo has four established bedrooms each with French door access to the long verandah. All doors and transoms present with the original furniture. These bedrooms have four metre high ceilings whilst the master bedroom features a bay window with lead-light panels. Rare nowadays in old Queenslanders are etched metal ceilings but Consuelo has four in pristine condition. Coupled with polished timber floors, tongue and groove walls, huge casement windows (many with glorious lead-lighting) and picture rails, the genuine 1920’s light fittings make this home a showcase of living history.
The upstairs lounge, also high ceilinged, connects to the small verandah through two sets of French doors whilst a sunroom/dinette can also be accessed from the front verandah. The core of the home displays its past, the kitchen with its neutral tones, upstairs bathroom and toilet are 21st century creations. These areas are in keeping with the style of the home.
Below stairs is a whole different world. Accessed by a wide, wooden staircase, the ground storey is dominated by extensive recreation and entertainment spaces. Fully carpeted, this area currently has a three- quarter slate billiard table occupying one section whilst a complete gym and home movie viewing recess have designated areas also. An office as well as a utility room with street access are located on this ground floor level. The previous owners who were medical doctors utilized these two rooms for their home surgery. Consuelo obviously would be an ideal home for an extended family or a home business.
The inside entertainment area spills outside to undercover barbecue and picnic facilities both of which are adjacent to the saltwater swimming pool. Over the years many a social function has been celebrated around the pool. Consuelo offers swimmers either a dip in the pool or a session in the inground spa. If you enjoy a game of backyard cricket then this too can be accommodated on the generous lawn. Being on the corner of two quiet streets, the property has ample parking for visitors or business customers.
Under-house parking guarantees dry entry to the home whilst an outside garage with two attached carports takes care of any extra vehicles. Secure storage for a tinny or caravan is assured as the property is fully fenced.
Down through the years Consuelo's street appeal has been appreciated by many a passerby. She loves the attention that is bestowed on her and thinks that she has been fortunate to have had such caring and indulgent parents over her lifetime. Quite small in her youth she has now grown up. Her under-roof area has increased to 500+ square metres. Recently she visited the beauty parlour for an interior paint job and was presented with a brand- new bonnet several years ago when her roof was replaced. She is now awaiting admirers with a dowry so that her current parents will be encouraged to accept the suitor’s proposal. Robert and Elsie advised Consuelo when she was growing up that a picture was worth a thousand words so she now requests that interested parties proceed to her photo album, admire her, and then offer their dowry which has been saved for this prospective union. Consuelo awaits in anxious anticipation.
